The Badshaah of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan was at his quirky best discussing his new film and relationships now and then. TWF-IBNS correspondent Shilpa Salwan listens to the King of Romance

You are literally dancing and jumping around in the movie, how do you have such energy at 51?

No, I am 51 and I feel it every moment of my breathing day but when you have to do what you have to do, I think, the director, the coreographer and so many other people in the film, they work very hard and make sure you look like highly energetic in the film and I too try to do my best.

Why did you choose to do a journey film?

When one is not looking for a film is when a film finds you. I was in a state of mind when I just felt it would be an interesting thing to make a journey film, Imtiaz met me at that point of time. I know fully well that Imtiaz's stories are not mostly straight and they have a lot of internalisation in terms of the struggle in between characters, plot points and so on.

Your first day opening is approximately 15.9 crores, so what do you think of that?

I think that keeping the genre in mind which is a love story and is a journey film with two people in it that generally is a little constricted as a target audience and for that I think it is really nice. If I would compare it with a regular film on a holiday, then it would be different. So, this is extremely encouraging.

From Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi to Jab Harry Met Sejal, how was the journey with Anushka Sharma as a co star?

When you have an actor who started a little later than you, their experiences of life are very different and the first film that we did, there were different kinds of scenes and at the release, we did not meet the press so much but I remember saying this to a lot of people that because of her new take on things it made me react as an actor. Now, it Is nine years for Anushka in the industry and still that newness, freshness, earnestness is there. I am extremely happy every time and feel at home that Anushka Sharma is doing a film with me.

What is your favourite dialogue from the movie?

“Tumhe pata hai ki Punjabi singers itni uchi awaz me kyu gaate hai? Farmers hote hai sare, to kheti karte waqt tractor chalate hai. Isliye apni awaz sunne ke liye tractor se ucha gana parta hai.” I think this is an extremely creative dialogue and I love the metaphor here.

The tagline of the film says what you seek is seeking you, so as an actor and a human what are you seeking at this point of time?

Newness, novelty in everything. In expression and my offering as an actor and life as a person, father, husband and when I say new, it's not just for the sake of being new. I want to keep the gusto for life going. We should wake up in the morning and try a new feeling instead of the drudgery of the old day.

What is Harinder Nehra seeking in the movie? Love or Home?

I have read the most beautiful thing about love. I have said many romantic lines in films but this is one line that nobody has made me say. It is “ I feel that you are my home and I love you so much” because you know, your house, city, nation, that verandah, that terrace make you feel safe, warm and welcome. I travel around the world in the best of places and so many people love me, including yourself and yet the house bed gives the best sleep. So, I think home and love both are quiet equitable you feel at home with the person you love.

According to you, what should someone seek from their partners in relationships today?

(laughs) About today, I don't know. I am pretty yesterday. I think relationships today have become a little more, umm (smirking at Anushka Sharma), not hers, but it has become a little more practical. I think love should be impractical, unreasonable as reasons can change and so will love. Small issues become too much now days. But mine could be an old fashioned point of view. The world is changing and everybody has less time. So, maybe everything needs to be done kind of like fast food but I am not too sure. I, like Harry still believe in the old seven course meal kind of situation.

Being the romantic Badshaah of Bollywood, you were into that genre from the beginning and then you started experimenting with comedy, and sinisterness in Darr and Raees so, are you coming back to romance and staying with it or further experiments are on?

I will be really honest. It's very nice that people analyse so much of the moves that I make. It is actually very simple. Neither am I coming back to something nor am I going anywhere. Like the song, “Safar ka hi tha main safar ka raha.” For me all this is a journey and I am not trying to figure out anything. I am an actor and directors must assume I can do different things. I did not try to achieve anything with my choice of films, I just did it because as Sir Edmund Hillary once said, “I climbed the Mount Everest because it was there” and so, I just do it because it is there. Of course, in retrospect, good thinking people, like you want to analyse and suggest. So, thank you for those. I feel excited to do it because if I am not excited, I will never be able to excite you even with the dimplest smile of mine. (smiles)
