1300 killed in heat wave in India
New Delhi, May 28 (IBNS) The sweltering heat wave sweeping through major parts of India has so far left more than 1300 people dead with Andhra Ptradesh and Telengana being the worst hit states.
Reports said temperatures surpassed 116 degrees in some places in recent days and were higher than normal even in coastal areas.
Most of the deaths were reported in Andhra Pradesh and Telengana with more than 1,000 people killed in Andhra alone over the last ten days.
Reports quoted an official of the Indian Meteorological Department as saying that the high temperatures are the result of hot winds blowing in from the west which contributed to delaying rains in southern India.
The Telngana government is working in tandem with non government organisations to provide buttermilk and drinking water to residents. In Andhra Pradesh, the government has urged the people to stay indoors, especially between noon and 4 pm.
