Deaf driver shot dead by US trooper over traffic violation
Miami, Aug 23 (IBNS) : Authorities have started investigation into a recent incident in which a trooper in North Carolina shot dead a deaf youth over traffic violation, media reports said.
Twentynine-year-old Daniel Harris was shot and killed just feet from his home "almost immediately" after exiting his vehicle, reports quoted his neighbours as saying.
He appeared to be trying to communicate with the officer via sign language.
Jermaine Saunders, the trooper who shot Harris, was on a long chase on Thursday that started on an interstate highway and ended outside his home in Charlotte, local television station WSOC reported.
Police claim they attempted to pull Harris over for speeding, but he continued driving home instead of pulling over.
Whether Harris fully understood what was happening, since he could not have heard the sirens, is unclear.
His family, including his siblings, are also reportedly hearing impaired.
The incident added to the list of more than 750 people in the US being gunned down by police so far this year- a phenomenon that has led to an outcry.
