Delhi Lieutenant Governor meets Rajnath Singh

by IBNS 28 May 2015, 10:19 am

New Delhi, May 28 (IBNS) Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung met with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday, a day before the Supreme Court hears the case on the issue of primacy in the city-state's administrative matters.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been embroiled in a bitter struggle for power with Jung, apparently being backed by the centre.

Kejriwal has alleged that the Narendra Modi Government at the centre is trying to rule Delhi through the Lieutenant Governor.

The Lieutenant Governor acts as the representative of the Centre in Delhi and is vested with considerable powers because the capital is a union territory, but Kejriwal, whose Aam Aadmi Party came to power in February enjoying an overwhelming people's mandate demands he be given primacy in matters like appointment of bureaucrats.

After the centre demarcated the authority  of the Lieutenant Governor and the Chief Minister, the Delhi High Court  denounced as "suspect" the  notification by the Centre which outlined vast authority for Jung and shrunk the the space of  Kejriwal. The Centre has appealed against the High Court's verdict in the apex court.

The flash point of the feud that broke out between  Jung and Kejriwal is the appointment of top bureaucrats. Jung claims he alone can decide on their postings, while Kejriwal says he cannot be saddled with officers who have not been selected in consultation with him.

An emergency session of the Delhi Assembly has taken stock of the crisis with the Centre and declared the contentious notification as "illegal".
