Govt may allow Land Ordinance to lapse?
New Delhi, Mar 25 (IBNS): The Central Government is now considering to let the Land Ordinance lapse in normal course on April 5 and not reissue it, media reports said on Wednesday.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the matter today with the core group of the BJP, they said, and the government is actively considering not re-issuing the contentious land ordinance. The government will try to take up land bill after consultations with farm groups and political parties in the second half of budget session, they said," NDTV reported.
The government has been making repeated attempts to pass the amendments to land acquisition bill.
Amid severe criticisms over the amendments to the land acquisition bill, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reached out to the farmers and said his government is making the changes for the welfare of them.
He said the Oppositions are spreading wrong information about the bill as they are conspiring to keep the farmers poor.
The government had brought in the ordinance on land acquisition on Dec 31 last year. It will lapse on April 5 if a law is not passed in Parliament to ratify it.
The Lok Sabha has already passed the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Bill, 2015 with nine amendments by a voice vote on March 9.
However, the bill is facing hurdles in the Rajya Sabha where the government is in minority.
