IBPS Clerk Exam 2016-2017:Paper Analysis
IBPS Clerk Mains 2016-17 Exam was conducted on 1st January 2017 at various centers across the country in a single slot.This article shares a detailed analysis of IBPS clerk Mains exam 2016-17 based on students review who appeared for it.
• IBPS clerk exam pattern is decided byInstitute of Banking Personnel Selection.
• IBPS Clerk Mains Exam was of 200 marks with 200 number of questions which were to be done in 135 minutes in total.
• There were 40 questions in the exam from each section, viz Reasoning Ability, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, General Awareness (with special reference to Banking) and Computer Knowledge.
• The Reasoning Ability sectionwas of 50 marks, English Language of 40 marks, Quantitative Aptitude of 50 marks, General Awareness of 50 marks and Computer Knowledge of 20 marks.
• Time allotted for Reasoning Ability section was 30 minutes, for English Language was 30 minutes, for Quantitative Aptitude was 30 minutes, for General Awareness was 25 minutes and for Computer Knowledge was 20 minutes.
• Exam came as a shock for many students since there were major changes as compared to last year and just a few questions followed the same pattern as that of IBPS PO Mains exam this year.

This paper analysis willhelp you to identify the changing levels of IBPS Exams and will help everyone who will take up exams this year.
1. Reasoning Ability
There were 40 questions in all in this section. According to students, this section was difficult overall.
• Puzzles and Seating Arrangement – around 25 questions in the Reasoning Ability section was from these topics.Questions were also thee from miscellaneous topics such as blood relation and direction sense. The questions were tricky and many possibility cases could be formed.Hence the level of this portion was difficult.
• Data Sufficiency - 5 questions were asked from this topic. Level of the questions was moderate. Questions in this portionwere based on data provided in 3 statements rather than 2 as it is usually asked. 2-3 questions were doable from this topic.
• Coding - Decoding - 5 questions were asked from this topic. Pattern of this topic was a bit different this time. Questions were asked on the same pattern as that of IBPS PO Mains Exam 2016.
• Verbal / Logical Reasoning - Remaining questions of this section were asked from verbal/reasoning topic. Questions were asked from Course of action, Cause and Effect etc. Level of questions from this topic was moderate and 3-4 questions were doable.
2. Quantitative Aptitude
40 questions were asked from this topic. Overall level of this section was Difficult and questions asked were calculative.
• Number Series - 5 questions were asked from this topic. Level of the questions asked was Moderate. Series asked were based on Alternating series, difference in exponential form etc. 2-3 questions from this topic were doable.
• Data Interpretation - 2 sets of DI i.e. 10 questions were asked from this topic. While tabular DI was tricky and calculative, line graph was comparatively doable.
• Quadratic Equations - 5 questions were asked from this topic. Level of these questions was moderate and 4-5 questions were doable.
• Data Sufficiency - Another 5 questions were asked from this topic. Level of these questions was moderate.
• Miscellaneous - Major portion, i.e. 15 questions in this section was asked from Miscellaneous category. This involved questions from Probability, Partnership, Average, Mensuration, Mixture and Allegation, Boats and Streams, Time and Work, Problem on ages, Profit and Loss, Simple and Compound Interest etc. Level of these questions was moderate to difficult. Questions asked were calculative and time consuming.
3. English Language
There were 40 questions in this section. There were a lot of changes in the English section this year. Overall level of this section was Moderate.
• Reading Comprehension - 2 sets of comprehension (15 - 16 questions) were asked from this topic. Passages were mostly economy based (Brexit issue). Synonym/ Antonym questions were asked from passage. Comprehensions were lengthy but level of questions was moderate.
• Fill in the blanks - 5 questions were asked from this topic. Instead of 2, questions asked were based on 3 fillers in a sentence. Level of these questions was moderate.
• Spotting Errors - Few questions were asked from this topic as well. Level of the questions was moderate.
• Odd one out - This was a new topic introduced in the exam this year. A phrase/ sentence was given in the question and individual sentences were given in the option. You had to identify which statement did/ did not follow or give proper meaning of the given phrase or was out of context as that of the statement in the question. Level of these questions was moderate to difficult.
• Para Jumbles - 1-2 questions were asked from this topic. Unlike previous pattern where question was asked in a set, individual questions were asked. You had to arrange all the sentences logically and identify the pattern in the given options.
• Sentence Improvement - Questions were asked from this topic as well. 2-3 parts of a sentence were given in bold here and you had to select the appropriate option that would improve the sentence.
4. General Awareness and Computer Knowledge Section
There were 40 questions in all from each of the topicsin this section. The questions were mostly asked from Banking Awareness. Questions were tricky and the options provided were quite confusing.
