Srinagar, Nov 13 (IBNS) Delhi based International Muslim Unity Council (IMUC), propagating the concept of Hijab among Muslim females, has launched its campaign in Kashmir Valley, reports said.

Scores of female activists from International Muslim Unity Council (IMUC) interacted on Thursday

with College going female students and made them aware about the essence of Hijab in Islam.

“I think it is important for everyone to try to understand and experience Kashmiri particularly Islamic cultures and belief system. Our basic motive is to propagate the concept of Hijab in Muslim society,” an activist said.

The group is planning to target other educational institutions too.  The activist claimed that use of the hijab was going down in the State.

“In the past 15 years, there is a visible change in Kashmir. Women are not wearing the hijab the way they used to,” he said.

However, several students took umbrage at the IMUC’s action.

“We are employing the soft way of putting across our message. The West, through the media, is trying to dissuade Muslim women from wearing the hijab. Kashmir is a pious land and hijab should be worn,” IMUC general secretary Syed Javid Abbas said

“We wanted to encourage Muslim women to throw on the hijab and experience it, when Muslim women can throw on hijab in countries like France,” said another activist.
