Meghalaya: Army guns down 2 civilians by mistake
Shillong, Nov 27 (IBNS) Army personnel on Wednesday shot down two civilians, mistaking them for Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants, according to media reports.
The victims, a school teacher and his friend, were identified as Alphium Momin and Sweetbirth D Marak, are residents of Rajasimla village, They were atop a two wheeler when they were gunned down.
A national daily quoted North Garo Hills SP, Ramesh Singh as saying, "We have registered a case against the killings. The Army informed us about the incident on Thursday morning."
The Army has also launched a probe into the incident they have referred to as a mistake.
Meanwhile, tension has flared up with both the police and locals blaming the army, terming it a 'violation of law' and a 'fake encounter'.
