PM Modi tweets on 1975 emergency
New Delhi, June 25 (IBNS) On the day the infamous declaration of emergency completed 40 years Prime Minister Narendra Modi said : "Let us do everything possible to further strengthen our democratic ideals and ethos."
Targeting the Congress which was in power at the time of emergency in 1975 Modi tweeted on Thursday
morning: "We are very proud of the lakhs of people, who resisted the Emergency and whose efforts ensured that our democratic fabric is preserved."
He said a "vibrant, liberal democracy" is the key to progress.
The ruling BJP has planned to organise events to mark the anniversary of the Emergency rule, when many prominent people, including opposition leaders were jailed and restrictions imposed on the media
"We mark 40 years of one of India's darkest periods- the Emergency, when the then political leadership trampled over our democracy. Inspired by the call of JP, several men and women across India selflessly immersed themselves in the movement to safeguard our democracy," PM Modi tweeted, referring to Jayaprakash Narayan, who led the fight against emergency.
"Personally, the Emergency brings back many memories. As youngsters, we learnt a lot during the anti-Emergency movement. Emergency was a great opportunity to work with a wide spectrum of leaders and organisations fighting for the same goal- return of democracy," PM Modi said.
