Polling in Tamil Nadu by-poll begins as Jayalalithaa contests
Chennai, June 27 (IBNS) Voting began for the by-election to Tamil Nadu's Radhakrishnan Nagar assembly constituency on Saturday, from where Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa is seeking re-election.
Jayalalithaa, who returned hold the state's reign last month after the Karnataka High Court acquitted her from the charges of disproportionate asset has to fulfil the constitutional obligation of getting elected as MLA within six months of becoming Chief Minister.
In September last year she forfeited her membership to the legislature and had to step down as Chief Minister after a trial court court found her guilty of amassing wealth disproportionate to the known sources of her income and pronounced a four-year jail term.
Altogether 28 candidates are contesting the RK Nagar by-poll, which was vacated by AIADMK's P Vetrivel on May 17 to make a space for Jayalalithaa.
However 26 of the contesting candidates are independents as major opposition parties have boycotted the by-poll alleging misuse of power by the AIADMK.
