President condoles Ananthamurthy's demise

New Delhi, Aug 23 (IBNS): President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday condoled the passing away of Jnanpith Awardee and renowned Kannada writer Udupi Rajagopalacharya Ananthamurthy.

In a tweet, the President said, “Nation will always remember Ananthamurthy’s invaluable contribution to literature”. 
 
Eminent writer Ananthamurthy breathed his last on Friday
 
He was 82.
 
He died at a Bangalore hospital where he was  undergoing treatment for kidney failure.
 
The veteran author was in critical condition and was on multi-monitor support. 
 
He was hospitalised for infection and fever 10 days ago.
 
Being a contemporary writer and critic in the Kannada language, Ananthamurthy was considered as one of the pioneers of the Navya movement.
 
Besides, the Jnanpith Award, he is also the recipient of the the Padma Bhushan award.
 
 He was the Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University in Kerala during the late 1980s. 
 
He was one of the finalists of Man Booker International Prize for the year 2013.
 
Earlier Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mourned his demise.
 
"Shri UR Ananthamurthy's demise is a loss to Kannada literature. My condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace," Modi tweeted.
