Saharanpur curfew relaxed for few hours on Eid
Saharanpur, July 29 (IBNS): Curfew imposed in Uttar Pradeshs Saharanpur following violent clashes between two groups has been relaxed for a few hours on Tuesday due to celebration of Eid.
Sources said curfew has been lifted between 7 am and 11 am and will also be relaxed between 3 pm and 7 pm. Eid prayers began at around 8.45 am in riot-hit Saharanpur.
At least three people were killed and 24 injured in clashes over a plot of Gurudwara in the region. Accordingly, curfew was imposed in Saharanpur on Saturday. The situation went out of control as members from both the communities had started pelting stones at each other and set several shops and vehicles on fire.
Reports said a controversial land, adjacent to Gurudwara, was seized by another community that hurt the sentiment of people from the other group. The differences further worsened after a local court delivered its verdict in favour of one particular community upsetting the other.
As many as 38 people were arrested in connection with the incident and nine First Information Reports (FIRs) lodged with the police.
Later, heavy contingent of police force, led by senior officials, had reached the spot to bring the situation under control. The police had also used tear gas shells to quell the irate mob from both the sides.
