SC to hear petitions against Centere's decision to allow Jallikattu today
New Delhi, Jan 12 (IBNS) The Supreme Court on Tuesday is all set to hear a batch of petitions that have been filed against the recent notification by the Centre on lifting a ban on Tamil Nadu's bull-taming sport Jallikattu.
However, the Tamil Nadu government has welcomed the decision to lift ban on the festival and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his ‘prompt response' to the appeal for allowing the sport.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said, "I am very grateful to you for your prompt response in the matter, which has enabled the conduct of Jallikattu."
The centre has, however, imposed some conditions to prevent cruelty against animal.
However, the petitioners, who include animal rights activist Gauri Maulekhi, have sought the quashing of the government notification.
PETA India has urged the Centre to withdraw its notification on the issue.
In a statement, PETA India said: "PETA India has long campaigned against the use of bulls in performances. In 2014, the Supreme Court passed a judgement in favour of PETA India and the Animal Welfare Board of India confirming a ban on jallikattu, bullfights and bull races. Despite this, the government is now permitting cruel events like jallikattu and bull races again. "
