Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut convicted in defamation case filed by former BJP MP's wife
Mumbai/IBNS: A magistrate court in Mumbai has convicted Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut in a defamation case which was filed by former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kirit Somaiya's wife Medha Somaiya, media reports said.
Raut, a Rajya Sabha MP, has been imprisoned for 15 days and a fine of Rs. 25,000 is imposed on him.
Medha Somaiya, a professor of organic chemistry, had filed a complaint against Raut accusing him of making defamatory and incorrect statements on April 15 and 16.
Medha had submitted video clips claiming Raut made the statements to media channels.
The professor had demanded an unconditional apology to her and a restrain on him from making any defamatory statement against her in future.
In her court plea, Medha claimed an editorial in Shiv Sena's mouthpiece Saamana accused the Somaiya couple of being involved in an alleged toilet scam in the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation.
