Sonia holds Iftar party for opposition leaders, but Mulayam stays away
New Delhi, Jul 14 (IBNS) Samajwadi chief Mulayam Singh Yadav was conspicuous by his absence as Congress President Sonia Gandhi's Iftar party in the capital on Monday evening witnessed assembly of several opposition leaders making the occasion a platform for mastering unity of the non-NDA forces.
Reports said Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Derek O'Brien of the Trinamool Congress were among those who shared space with Sonia Gandhi at her residence.
But the Congress' effort to put up a display of opposition unity didn't seemed to have produced the desired result as the senior-most leader from the Janata Parivar and Samajwadi party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav stayed away. He did not send any representative either.
CP(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, who had to leave for UK, could not also attend the party. Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad sent his aide Prem Chand Gupta, as he held his own Iftar in Patna the same evening.
Media reports quoted Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi as saying that he would speak on the issue of corruption in the monsoon session of Parliament, which beginsJuly 21.
