Tirupur dalit murder : Four detained, victim's body cremated after clashes
Chennai, Mar 15 (IBNS) Police have detained four persons in connection with the brutal murder of dalit youth V Sankar, whose body was cremated on Monday night under tight security after massive protests and clashes.
Police said those detained at the Udumpalpet police station are : Jagdeesn, Selvakumar, Manikantan and Madan-all stated to be friends of Chinnasamy, the father of Kausalya, Sankar's wife.
Chinnasamy, who runs a travel agency, surrendered before a court at Nilakottai in Dindigul district on Sunday, but claimed he had no role in the killing.
Sankar and his wife Kausalya who belongs to the Thevar community, were attacked by a gang of persons with weapons on Sunday. While Sankar died, Kausalya is recovering from the injuries at a Coimbatore hospital.
Police faced a tough time on Monday night as a large number of people surrounded the van carrying Sankar's body, refusing to allow the cremation unless the killers were arrested. The police had to use force and reassurances to convince the protesters to let go of the body.
Reports said a National Human Rights Commission team was likely to visit Udumalpet on Wednesday, where the crime had occurred.
