New Delhi/IBNS: In more power to New Delhi, the United Kingdom has supported India's bid to assume a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, media reports said.

In an ANI podcast with its editor-in-chief Smita Prakash, British High Commissioner Alexander Ellis said, "We certainly support India becoming a member of the UNSC as this is why the UNSC reforms are the institutional that reflects the realities of today."

"Change in the institution (UNSC) is hard and we need to make them work. Some of them come after the second World War like the UN and UNSC, some came later like the World Trade Organization (WTO)... zenith of globalization, the mid 90s and what we want from India is actually to make the institution effective," he added.

The UNSC, which is charged with ensuring international peace and security, has 15 members, of which five are permanent members- the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia and China — and 10 are non-permanent.

The UNSC is the sole body having its authority to issue binding resolutions on member states.
