Peerless Hospital hosts MedisafeCon 2024 to improve patients through accurate diagnosis
Kolkata Peerless Hospital, Kolkata, successfully organized its flagship one-day conference, MediSafeCon 2024, with the theme “Get it Right, Make it Safe,” focused on increasing awareness about accurate diagnosis and the use of appropriate therapeutics.
Held on Sept 28, MediSafeCon was dedicated to advancing patient safety by addressing the critical challenges of diagnostic errors in healthcare, in line with this year's World Patient Safety Day theme – “Improving Diagnosis for Patient Safety.”
Diagnostic errors, such as missed, delayed, or incorrect diagnoses, contribute to inappropriate treatments, patient harm, or even death. MediSafeCon 2024 brought together leading doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and medico-legal experts from West Bengal and across India to discuss practical strategies to ensure correct diagnoses and reduce medical errors.
The sessions emphasized the importance of accurate diagnostic practices, therapeutic interventions, and interprofessional collaboration.
Key Strategies for Improving Diagnosis Discussed:
1. Promote a Culture of Collaboration and Open Communication:
o Interdisciplinary Teamwork: Fostering collaboration among doctors, nurses, specialists, and pharmacists to reduce diagnostic errors through multiple perspectives.
o Patient Communication: Encouraging open dialogue with patients, ensuring that symptoms are clearly communicated and understood by healthcare providers.
2. Adoption of Diagnostic Decision Support Tools:
o AI & Machine Learning: Utilizing advanced technologies to assist healthcare professionals in interpreting complex data, minimizing errors.
o Electronic Health Records (EHR): Optimizing EHR systems to flag inconsistencies and enhance clinical decision-making by integrating diagnostic guidelines.
3. Continuous Education and Simulation Training:
o Ongoing Medical Education: Regular training for healthcare professionals on new diagnostic techniques and addressing cognitive biases.
o Simulation-Based Learning: Offering diagnostic simulations to reinforce decision-making and critical thinking skills.
4. Patient Engagement in Diagnosis:
o Shared Decision-Making: Involving patients in diagnostic decisions and discussions, empowering them to ask questions and seek second opinions when necessary.
5. Leveraging Advanced Technology for Enhanced Diagnosis:
o Genomic Medicine: Implementing genetic testing to improve diagnostic accuracy, especially in rare or hereditary conditions.
o Telemedicine: Utilizing remote consultations to reduce diagnostic delays in underserved areas.
6. Enhancing Communication of Diagnostic Uncertainty:
o Clear Communication: Encouraging physicians to communicate diagnostic uncertainties and regularly reassess diagnoses as new information becomes available.
Prof. (Dr.) Subhrojyoti Bhowmick, Organizing Chairman of MediSafeCon 2024, said: “Patient safety is a continuously evolving field, and there is always room to learn and grow. This conference brings together global experts to share cutting-edge practices, successful strategies, and technologies that enhance patient outcomes and reduce risk.”
Ravindra Pai, Managing Director, Peerless Hospital, Kolkata, emphasized, “This conference fills a huge gap in addressing patient safety owing to diagnosis, medication errors, awareness, and support for families. At Peerless Hospital, we are evolving every year by adding clinical research on one side and increasing the bandwidth of new technology while training doctors on advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques.”
The sessions at MediSafeCon underscored the urgency of addressing diagnostic errors, which can have profound consequences on patient outcomes. According to WHO, diagnostic errors account for 10% of patient deaths globally, and the conference highlighted the role of interdisciplinary collaboration, technology, and patient engagement in overcoming this challenge.
MediSafeCon 2024 serves as a critical platform for driving change in diagnostic practices, ensuring that healthcare professionals are equipped with the knowledge, tools, and support needed to improve patient safety and outcomes.
