China officially adopts 2-child policy
Beijing, Dec 28 (IBNS) Putting an end to their long standing one child policy, the Chinese government has officially adopted the two child policy, according to the government run Xinhua News Agency.
"The state advocates one couple having two children," the new law that was passed on Sunday by National People's Congress Standing Committee reads.
China's one child policy, introduced in the late 1970's, proved counter effective and was one of the main reason for the depleting birth rate in the country, also preventing the growth of workforce in the land as majority of the population was heading towards an age barrier of 40.
"The "one couple, one child" policy is estimated to have prevented some 400 million births, reducing pressure on resources and the environment," Xinhua reported.
