Former Lok Sabha Speaker and veteran Congress leader Balram Jakhar passed away on Wednesday
New Delhi, Feb 3 (IBNS): Former Lok Sabha Speaker and veteran Congress leader Balram Jakhar passed away in New Delhi on Wednesday. He was 92.
Jakhar served as Speaker of Lok Sabha from 1980 to 1989 and was instrumental in establishing the Parliament Museum.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and top leaders have condoled the death of Jakhar.
The PM tweeted: "Balram Jakhar ji was a popular leader who enriched our Parliamentary democracy in his long political journey. Saddened by his demise. RIP."
Congress Party president, Sonia Gandhi has said that whether as a legislator, parliamentarian, minister, speaker or governor, Jakhar forever remained at the forefront, taking up issues concerning agriculture and farmers.
Tweets from office of Rahul Gandhi, Congress Party vice-president, said: "Extremely saddened by the passing away of veteran Congress leader Dr Balram Jakharji.In his passing Congress Party has lost a stalwart. His immense contribution to the nation in his long political career as Parliamentarian,Union Minister&Governor will always be remembered."
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that the demise of Jakhar, a former Governor of the state and who was a messiah for farmers and a true statesman, is an irreparable loss.
The cremation will take place on Thursday at Abohar in Punjab.
