I-Day: PM urges investors to "Make in India"

New Delhi, Aug 15 (IBNS) In a departure from the past, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his first Independence Day speech on Friday spoke extempore and dwelt on building a strong India industrially by welcoming the world to make products here while giving a clarion call to make a Clean India with toilets in villages and schools.

Speaking from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the 68th Independence Day, he also announced to do away with the Planning Commission and replace it with a new institution.

Modi focused on job creation by harping on building a strong manufacturing base in India.

"Our dream should be that all over the world we can say-Made in India. I tell the world- Come, Make In India. Sell anywhere but manufacture here. We have the skill and talent," said Modi.

"Let us think about 0 defect- that our products are not defected and 0 effect- our products have no adverse effect on the environment," said the PM.

He said from automobile to chemical and electronics and plastics to submarine to satellite, all should be manufactured here.
 
"Let us come together and think of ways India does not have to import but we export to the world," he said, adding that "we need to give impetus to manufacturing sector."

"The world has changed. We can't think about our development journey isolated from the world," said Modi:

The PM said Planning Commission will be done away with.

"In a short span of time we will initiative a new institution that will work in place of the Planning Commission," he said.

"Importance of federal structure is only increasing. This is a good thing and we have to strengthen it. Today the times have changed from the time the Planning Commission was created. People are asking for a while now- what about the Planning Commission," he said.

The PM spoke about a Clean India.

"I announce an initiative- Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana. If we have to build the nation we have to start from the villages. I come from a poor family and I want the poor to get dignity. We want to start a movement for a Clean India," said Modi.

"You would think that from Red Fort he is talking about cleanliness and toilets but I am speaking from the heart. Let us pledge that I will not make my surroundings dirty," he said.

The PM said the news of rapes from India are news of shame and asked why the parents never asked what their sons are doing as they grow up and put all restrictions on the girls.

"The parents should start asking the boys what they are doing and where they are going. After all the rapist is also someone's son," he said.

"Law will take its own path but we need to take responsibility to bring our sons who deviated from right path to bring them back. As parents have we asked our sons where he is going. Why not put same yardstick for sons too," he said.

Modi said he was considered an outsider in Delhi and the elite had kept him away.

Modi said he wants to integrate the poorest of the poor in India with bank accounts.

Modi spoke on girl child too.

"Our sportspersons have brought us immense pride. So many brought us medals and I am proud that there are several daughters too. I appeal to parents not to sacrifice the girl child. I have seen families where 1 daughter served parents more than even 5 sons," he said.

"Have we seen our sex ration? Who is creating this imbalance in society. Not Almighty. I appeal to doctors not to kill the girl child," said Modi.

Modi also spoke on communal violence.

"Just see how the path of peace, unity, brotherhood helps towards India's growth. Lets take path of Sadbhavana. Be it caste or communal violence, they stall the growth of the nation. Let us affirm that we will be free from these tensions," he said.

He said the path of violence should be shunned.

The PM also rued quarrelling among government departments.

"One Government department is quarrelling against the other. Matters reached the Supreme Court too. How can we take India ahead like this," asked the PM.

"I saw that even in one Government there were different Governments. It was as if each had their own Jagirs," said the PM.
