Kapu community withdraws protest in Andhra Pradesh
Hyderabad, Feb 1 (IBNS): The Kapu community of Andhra Pradesh, who were demanding reservation and Backward Classes status for them on Sunday and whose demonstrations had turned violent, have called off their protest.
M Padmanabhan, a leader of the protesting group has said they are hopeful of resolving the issue through talks with the state's chief minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu.
Violent protests hit East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh as demonstrators belonging to the Kapu community blocked highways, railway lines and and set fire on train bogies on Sunday.
Thousands of demonstrators belonging to the community blocked the Chennai-Kolkata national highway.
According to reports, demonstrators set fire to a police station in Tuni and ransacked the Tuni railway station.
Additional police forces were rushed to the spot.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu tweeted earlier: "Shocked and saddened by the incident at Tuni. We are closely monitoring the situation. Responsible people will be taken to justice."
