Kathak danseuse Sitara Devi dies in Mumbai hospital
Mumbai, Nov 25 (IBNS) Kathak Queen Sitara Devi, who was in a critical condition in a hospital in Mumbai, died on Tuesday morning, her family confirmed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death and recalled her rich contribution to Kathak.
Sitara Devi's both her kidneys had failed according to doctors attending to her at the Cumballa Hill Hospital.
Sitara Devi was born on Nov 8, 1920 in Kolkata.
Rabindranath Tagore had described her as Nritya Samragini, meaning the empress of dance, after watching her performance when she was just 16 years old. Tagore had inspired her to take the dance form to its heights.
She has given performances in several parts of India, and in several other countries, including at the Royal Albert Hall, London in 1967; and at the Carnegie Hall, New York in 1976.
She was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1969) and the Padma Shree (1973), Kalidas Samman (1995) and Nritya Nipuna. However, to her, her greatest award is the recognition she received from Tagore.
She had refused to accept the Padma Bhushan award and was quoted in media that she would not accept anything less than Bharat Ratna.
