Kerala court awards death sentence to convict in law student rape and murder case
Ernakulam, Dec 14 (IBNS): A Kerala sessions court awarded death penalty to Ameer-ul-Islam who was found guilty of rape and murder of a 30-year old law student, according to media reports on Thursday.
He was convicted on Tuesday.
According to reports, the court termed the crime as 'one of the rarest of the rare cases '. The court also said in its observation that the accused did not show any remorse after committing the heinous crime.
The rape and murder of the law student, almost a repeat of the brutality seen in the Nirbhaya case, took place in April 2016; its gruesome nature shocking the country.
The police arrested Ameer-ul-Islam, said to be a migrant labourer from Assam, 50 days after the incident.
The student's mother, who had discovered the body with wounds from sharp objects and the intestines pulled out, was present in court on Tuesday. Talking to NDTV, she said she hoped the court would award a death sentence. "What happened to my daughter, should not happen to anyone else," she said.
Islam was also sentenced to 14 years in jail and fined of Rs 5 lakh under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, media reported.
The court also observed that the special investigation team had conducted a scientific investigation, relying on DNA technology and call data records to establish the identity of the accused, reports said.
