Modi calls Kenya attack horrific, distressing
New Delhi, Apr 3 (IBNS): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called the terror attack on a university campus in Kenya killing nearly 147, as horrific and distressing.
"Terror attack in Kenya is horrific. It is most distressing that a university campus was attacked in this manner. Utterly condemnable," he tweeted.
India has strongly condemned the barbaric terrorist attack on the university campus at Garissa in north-eastern Kenya on Thursday, in which about 147 people, mostly students, were killed by Islamist militants.
"We stand in solidarity and sympathy with the bereaved families and the injured, and convey our heart-felt condolences to the Government and people of Kenya," said India in a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs.
"This outrageous terrorist act is yet another reminder that the menace of terrorism continues to threaten us all and the international community needs to further strengthen its fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations," it said.
At least 147 were killed and many injured after al-Shabab Islamist militants attacked Garissa University College in northeast Kenya on Thursday.
Over 500 students have been rescued from the Garissa University College campus, who were taken hostages.
Four terrorists were also killed after Kenyan troops launched an assault on the final building where the insurgents had holed up for over 12 hours.
An overnight curfew has been issued in parts of the country.
"Dusk to dawn curfew (6.30pm -6.30am)imposed by IG @JBoinnet in 4 counties namely:Garissa, Wajir, Mandera & Tana River," the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government in The Office of the President tweeted.
