SC sacks BCCI chief Anurag Thakur
New Delhi, Jan 2 (IBNS): The Supreme Court (SC) of India on Monday ordered the removal of Anurag Thakur, BCCI president and sacked secretary Ajay Shirke, according to media reports.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is the national governing body for cricket in India.
The SC in its order said that BCCI and state board officials failed to implement its orders to bring transparency and accountability in cricket body.
It said all board officials who had not fallen in line with the reforms recommended by the Lodha Committee must go, reported NDTV.
SC has also issued contempt notice to Anurag Thakur, media reported.
Anurag Thakur is also a BJP lawmaker. A third-time MP, he is the son of Prem Kumar Dhumal, the former Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.
At its last hearing two weeks ago, the court has said that Thakur seemed to have "committed perjury" after it was informed that he had made a false statement on asking the International Cricket Council or ICC to clarify whether a recommendation made by the Lodha committee amounted to interference in the board's running, reported NDTV.
SC had given the board time until Dec 3 to implement the reforms suggested by the Lodha panel.
But the board said that it was not able to implement all the reforms, according to media sources.
The SC, in Jan 2015, had set up the Lodha Committee, headed by former Chief Justice of India RM Lodha, to suggest changes in the way the BCCI, said to be one of the wealthiest cricket boards in the word, is run.
