Sushma Swaraj expects China may come around on India's NSG bid
New Delhi, Jul 20 (IBNS): India will not sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) but the engagement with China regarding India's bid to enter the Nuclear Suppliers' Group (NSG) continues, said External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj at the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
She was replying to the Opposition's queries regarding India's efforts to join the NSG.
In June, during an NSG meeting in Seoul (Korea), China had thwarted India's bid to be a member of NSG citing that India has not signed the NPT, according to media reports.
Sushma Swaraj said that just because China refused to agree once does not mean it will never agree.

Earlier, Opposition leaders claimed that India should have been more active with behind-the-scenes strategy meets rather than trying for a high profile push such as a last-minute appeal from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President Xi Jinping at a regional summit in Tashkent, reported NDTV.
Sushma Swaraj said that it was wrong to assume that the central government created a hype around the NSG issue, the media reported. The application in May was a low-key affair, she said but the attempt failed as China insisted on a procedural hurdle, .
