Tamil Nadu : DMK hit the street for statewide protest over Jallikattu
Chennai, Jan 13 (IBNS) : A day after the Supreme Court refused to pass a judgment on Jallikattu before Pongal, Dravida Munetra Kazhagam (DMK), the main opposition in Tamil Nadu, called for a state-wide protest on Friday, reports said.
Criticising both the Centre and the AIADMK-led Tamil Nadu Government, the DMK appropriate steps were not taken to ensure that the traditional sport, banned last year, can be held during Pongal.
The DMK party member under the leadership of working president MK Stalin and Kanimozhi gathered near the Collector’s office in Chennai.
Addressing the gathering, Stalin said,”Jallikattu is our tradition but the Centre and state Government have failed to get the permission to conduct it on Pongal.”
On Thursday, the Supreme Court said it was not possible to deliver the verdict on jallikattu before Saturday, the beginning of the Pongal festival.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court said it was not possible to deliver the verdict on jallikattu before Saturday, the beginning of the Pongal festival.
The apex court termed it an “unfair request” and declined to hear an interlocutory application seeking interim relief on lifting the ban on the traditional bull-taming sport.
The court also said a draft of the judgement has been prepared but it is unfair to ask the bench to pass orders.
The top court had reserved orders on petitions challenging the BJP government’s 2016 notification that sought to remove the bull from the performing animals list.
