Ahmedabad, June 29 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Gujarat, starting Thursday, visited the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad in the morning to inaugurate the Ashram's centenary celebrations, according to media reports.
He will also attend a special programme marking the 150th birth anniversary of Shrimad Rajchandraji.
Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani, accompanied the Prime Minister.
PM Modi also spun the Charkha in Sabarmati Ashram.
The PM, on Thursday, said, " This year we mark the 100th year of the establishment of Sabarmati Ashram as well as the Champaran Satyagraha. As a society, it is always essential to remain connected with our history."
"The thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi have the power to mitigate the challenges the world is facing today," the PM said at Sabarmati Ashram.
He also said there should be further academic research on the life and thoughts of Shrimad Rajchandraji.
It was at the Sabarmati Ashram that the PM broke his silence about the cow vigilantism that has led to grievous injury and death of several people. He said, "Today I want to say a few words and express sadness on some of the things going on."
"We are a land of non violence. We are the land of Mahatma Gandhi. Why do we forget that," the PM said, "No one spoke about protecting cows more than Mahatma Gandhi and Acharya Vinoba Bhave. Yes. It should be done."
However, the PM said that he is not in support of killing people in the name of cow vigilantism.
"Killing people in the name of Gau Bhakti is not acceptable. This is not something Mahatma Gandhi would approve," the PM said during his speech, "As a society, there is no place for violence. No person in this nation has the right to take the law in his or her own hands in this country."
"Violence never has and never will solve any problem," the PM added.
"Let's all work together. Let's create the India of Mahatma Gandhi's dreams. Let's create an India our freedom fighters would be proud of," the PM said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Rajkot in the evening where he will distribute aid among 18,000 differently-abled people.
"I will then travel to Rajkot, where I will join the Samajik Adhikarita Shivir and interact with my Divyang sisters and brothers," the PM had tweeted on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the PM is scheduled to inaugurate the first phase of the third link of Saurashtra Narmada Avataran Irrigation Yojana (SAUNI) by formally welcoming Narmada water into Aji dam, according to media reports.
