Cauvery water dispute: Tamil Nadu files fresh petition in the Supreme Court
Chennai, Sep 26 (IBNS): Tamil Nadu has filed fresh petitions in the Supreme Court regarding the release of Cauvery water to the state by Karnataka, according to media reports on Monday.
Tamil Nadu has appealed the apex court that Karnataka's petition should be heard only after the latter releases the water, media reported.
Earlier, Karnataka told the Supreme Court that it cannot release any more water from the Cauvery to Tamil Nadu till December, NDTV reported.
The Karnataka government, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of the Congress, has told the top court that the state is not in a position to release Cauvery water to the neighbouring state because Karnataka's major cities are on the verge of running out of drinking water.
Last week, the Supreme Court said that Karnataka must supply 6,000 cusecs of water till September 27 for Tamil Nadu farmers.
Karnataka has not acted on this order though the quantum of water was half the amount the Supreme Court had earlier asked to release.
Karnataka has witnessed violent protests over the water-sharing, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to appeal for calm.
