Girls disappear in UP if out on streets in evening: Goa CM
Panaji, July 25 (IBNS): Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar triggered a controversy by saying that girls disappear in Uttar Pradesh if they go out on streets in the evening.
Parrikar took the reference in terms of explaining the issue of safety for women in Goa.
“Any girl can walk without fear on Goa streets even at midnight. But in Uttar Pradesh, if a girl walks out at 6 in the evening, she will disappear,” he said in the assembly answering the question raised by the Opposition on the law and order situation in the state.
He claimed that some states, in a bid to promote tourism in their areas, were making attempts to put the coastal state into bad light as it attracts thousands of tourists, both domestic and international, ever year.
Earlier, Uttar Pradesh’s ruling Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh had made a controversial statement when he said the percentage of rape in the state was much less as compared to its population. The statement came from the SP supremo in the wake of gang-rape and murder of a 32-year-old lab assistant at Lucknow's Mohanlalganj area.
Mulayam had said that the population of Uttar Pradesh was 21 crore and each and every crime could not possibly be checked in the state.
Akhilesh Yadav-led SP government in Uttar Pradesh came to the focal point of criticism in May this year following the brutal incident of two cousin sisters found hanging from a tree. The girls were allegedly sexually assaulted and hanged the UP village.
Earlier in April this year, Mulayam had sparked off another controversy when in a poll rally, referring to the Mumbai Shakti Mills gangrape verdict of death sentence to rapists, he had said the boys made mistake but the punishment should not be hanging.
