Horror in Bangladesh: Hindu man lynched and set on fire amid violent protests

Dhaka: Amid escalating unrest and nationwide protests following the death of prominent youth activist Sharif Osman Hadi, a Hindu man was brutally lynched by a mob in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district, police and local media reports said.

According to reports citing BBC Bangla and carried by Indian media, the victim has been identified as Dipu Chandra Das, a garment factory worker and resident of Bhaluka Upazila. He was allegedly beaten to death late Thursday after a crowd accused him of making derogatory remarks about Islam.

Eyewitnesses and police officials were quoted as saying that the attackers tied Das’s body to a tree and set it on fire, scenes that have since circulated widely on social media, triggering outrage and condemnation.

Some reports also said the body was later dragged to a nearby road and burned again, underscoring the brutality of the attack.

The lynching took place against the backdrop of widespread protests and violence triggered by the death of activist Sharif Osman Hadi, who reportedly died of gunshot wounds. The unrest has led to clashes with security forces in Dhaka and other cities, as well as attacks on media houses, according to the Times of India and other outlets.

Local authorities said they have brought the situation in the area under control and recovered the body, which has been sent for post-mortem examination. However, initial reports indicated that no formal case was registered immediately, with police saying legal proceedings would follow once a complaint is filed.

The incident has renewed concerns among rights observers and commentators over mob violence and the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh, particularly at a time when political tensions remain high and street protests continue to intensify.

Reacting to the killing, West Bengal BJP leader Tarunjyoti Tewari said the incident reflected a disturbing pattern of violence against minorities.

“Is being born a Hindu in Bangladesh now a crime? The brutal killing of Dipu Chandra Das in Tarakanda, Mymensingh is not just the death of one man—it is a direct assault on civilization itself,” he said.

In a post on X, Tewari alleged that the youth was killed “on the basis of an allegation, without investigation, without trial, without law”, adding that the burning of the body and the sloganeering were meant to “deliberately manufacture terror.”

“This is not an isolated incident. It is part of a disturbing pattern—where an allegation becomes a death sentence, and minority identity itself becomes a crime,” he added.
