India celebrates 146th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi
New Delhi, Oct 2 (IBNS) India on Friday celebrated the 146th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi with day long programmes and tributes, including the one at his memorial at the Rajghat in the national capital.
Mahatma, born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1869 in Porbandar (Gujarat) to Putlibai and Karamchand Gandhi, was a lawyer turned activist who almost single-handedly shaped India’s freedom struggle against the British Government.

After India gained freedom, he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948.
His birthday is also observed as International Day of Non-Violence.
