Jayalalithaa's acquittal a farce : Karnataka govt tells the Supreme Court
New Delhi, June 23 (IBNS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was wrongly found innocent in a corruption case and her acquittal was a "farce," the Karnataka government said on Tuesday in the Supreme Court.
Jayalalithaa returned to office as Chief Minister in May after the Karnataka high court found her not guilty of amassing wealth disproportionate to her known sources of income during the first term as CM.
. The judge said that her wealth had increased by about 10 per cent during her first term, which was permissible.
Making an appeal against the verdict the the Karnataka government said the judge's arithmetical calculation was faulty.
The high curt verdict enabled Jayalalithaa to return as Chief Minister eight months after she was forced to resign when a lower court in Bangalore found her guilty and sentenced her to four years in prison.
Jayalalithaa, however, had to spend only three weeks in jail as she was later granted bail.
During her incarceration in September thousands of her supporters went on a rampage damaging public property while about 300 people killed themselves in protest.
