Only woman who received gallantry award fights to remain in the Army
New Delhi, Aug 21 (IBNS) Lt Colonel Mitali Madhumita, the lone woman to have won a gallantry award in the Indian Army is now fighting to stay in the force, media reports says.
Thirty nine-year-old Mitali had joined the Indian Army under the Short Service Commission. Her request for permanent commission has been turned down by the Ministry of Defence.
Mitali has now decided to move the Supreme Court against the Ministry's decision.
However, media reports have quoted the Ministry as saying that she had earlier rejected an offer of permanent commission in 2010, and the offer cannot be extended again.
Mitali became the first woman officer to be honoured with a gallantry award following a terrorist attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul in 2010.
Posted In Kabul at that time, she had helped save a lot of lives during the attack.
