Samajwadi Party heads for a split, Mulayam Singh to head a new party in Uttar Pradesh
Lucknow, May 5 (IBSN) : In the biggest political development in Uttar Pradesh since the Assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party heads for an imminent split with its founder Mulayam Singh Yadav going to head a new party, the Samajwadi Secular Morcha, reports said.
Announcing this on Friday, Mulayam Singh's brother Shivpal Yadav said the new party is being launched to "restore Mulayam Singh his lost honour."
Mulayam Singh, once the undisputed "Netaji" of the SP lost his position to son Akhilesh Yadav in course of a bitter feud between two opposite camps within the party that led to a virtual coup just before the elections.
Akhilesh, who once was handpicked by his father for the post of Chief Minister, took over as party chief as well.
In the intra-party tussle, Shiv Kumar Yadav commandeered the camp owing allegience to Mulayam while Ramgopal, another brother was with nephew Akhilesh.
Led by Akhilesh Yadav, the Samajwadi Party suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the BJP.
Mulayam Singh Yadav stayed away from the election, only campaigning for Shivpal Yadav and his daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav.
Earlier this week, Shivpal Yadav had said that a new party would be floated if Akhilesh Yadav did not hand over the reins of the Samajwadi Party to Mulayam Singh Yadav.
