Supreme Court rules against demolition of Adarsh building in Mumbai
New Delhi, July 22 (IBNS) : The Supreme Court on Friday ruled against the demolition of MumbaI's Adarsh Society building and asked the centre to take possession of the controversial structure.
"We will secure the building and there will be no demolition," Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar told the apex court.
The SC gave the ruling while responding to a petition against the 31-storey building's demolition after the Bombay High Court upheld on April 29, 2016 the order of the Ministry of Environment.
The Adarsh Society building has been in the centre of a controversy as a scam surfaced in November 2010, with allegations that it had violated various environmental norms and regulations, lacked certain permissions and other issues.
The building, originally intended to be a six-storey structure to house Kargil War heroes and widows, was later transformed into a 100-metre tall tower in which several politicians, bureaucrats and Army officers allegedly grabbed flats at cheap rates.
