Academy of Fine Arts hosts Black & White art exhibition by artist Saumi Nandy
Kolkata, Nov 23 (IBNS) Black & White, an art exhibition by artist Saumi Nandy, was inaugurated at the South art gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts on Sunday.
Painter Wasim Kapoor graced the occasion.
“I know Saumi for a long time and it is a privilege for me to be associated with all her exhibition. She has lots of varieties in her works as you can see there are ceramic paintings, fabric paintings on very small objects, this is indeed a very big achievement for any artist. Saumi has her own signature style in all her works,” artist Wasim Kapoor said.
USA based artist Saumi Nandy’s seven days long exhibition will exhibit a wide array of canvas paintings along with fabric paintings, ceramic paintings and graphic paintings for all age groups
“The theme of the exhibition is Black and White, black and white are one of my favourite colours, as you can see in all my paintings there is a touch of these two colours. The Indian textiles blocks have influenced me a lot and through my paintings I have made an effort to amalgamate the western concepts, principles with the east," the artist said.
Discussing her work the artist said: “Art for me is an everyday life, so you can see I have made an effort to incorporate art in all those objects that we use in our day to day life, from coffee mugs to saree’s, ties . Most of us feel that art cannot be introduced in our everyday life. The basic motive behind this exhibition is to showcase art in our everyday life.”
With the growing protest by the peoples from different sectors of creativity on communal intolerance in the country, artist Wasim Kapoor feels that the government is to be blamed for such protests.
He said, “The policies of the central government have forced us to take such steps. In the past we artists have protested through our works, but the situation is such that if you say anything against both central or the state government then you are going to be tagged as a ‘Maoist or a Pakistani’. I have personally faced such problems in the past. But we won’t stop ourselves we will continue this as long as we can.”
