AIADKM unlikely to celebrate 43rd birthday if Amma denied bail today
New Delhi, Oct 17 (IBNS): The AIADMK will to celebrate its 43rd birthday on Friday unless its chief J Jayalalithaa, 66, gets bail, media reports said.
The Supreme Court will hear the bail petition of the AIADMK chief and former Tamil Nadu chief minister who has been in a Bangalore jail for almost two weeks after being convicted in a corruption case.
Jayalalithaa, who was sentenced to four years in jail, moved the Supreme Court after the Karnataka High Court rejected her bail plea.
She will be represented in court on Friday by Constitutional expert Fali Nariman.
Sources said Jayalalithaa sought bail citing health grounds as she said she suffers from diabetes, hypertension, cellulites and other ailments.
Jayalalithaa, three others including her long-time associate Sashikala, were convicted in the 18 year-old corruption case by a special court in Bangalore. The case was filed in 1996 by Subramanian Swamy, now a BJP leader.
It was argued in the court that she had amassed property worth Rs. 66.65 crores - including 30 kg of gold, 12,000 saris and 2000 acres of land- despite not taking any salary as chief minister.
In reply, Jayalalithaa has said that she acquired her property and other assets through legal means, which was quashed by the special court.
The case against her was transferred in 2001 from Tamil Nadu to neighbouring Karnataka on the orders the Supreme Court.
