Delhi HC to hear AAP plea about using VVPAT in Delhi municipality poll
New Delhi, Apr 18 (IBNS): The Delhi High Court on Tuesday agreed to hear Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP's) plea asking that the Election Commission (EC) be directed to use VVPAT machines attached to Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for the upcoming Delhi municipality elections, according to media reports.
The Voter-Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machine, when attached to an EVM, helps voters understand if their vote has been recorded against the candidate intended.
It is actually a printing machine that gives out a slip of paper with the name and poll symbol of the candidate in whose favour the vote has been recorded, according to media reports.
The urgency for the VVPAT machine surfaced soon after the recently held Assembly Elections, when many Opposition parties alleged the EVMs were tampered with in many places.
AAP and the Congress has been demanding that EC holds the Delhi MCD poll with paper ballots, media reports said.
After MCD confirmed that the Delhi poll will be held with EVMs, AAP has approached the Delhi High Court that EC uses VVPAT machines attached to EVMs.
