Former Maldives President Nasheed jailed for 13 years

Male, Maldives, Mar 14(IBNS) former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed has been sentenced to 13-year imprisonment by a criminal court under the anti-terrorism laws.

Nasheed, arrested on February 22 for the detention of judge Abdullah Mohammed, was charged under the country's anti-terrorism act. 
 
The sentence was pronounced late last night.
 
Nasheed was Maldive's first democratically elected president.
 
He  resigned as Maldive's president in February 2012 following a mutiny by police and the army. This was followed by waves of protests against the arrest of judge Abdullah Mohammed on corruption charges.
