Robbers dig tunnel to loot crores from Haryana bank
Gohana, Oct 28 (IBNS): In a thriller movie-style sensational heist, a gang of robbers dug a 125 feet long tunnel through of earth and concrete, broke into a nationalised banks strong room and looted cash and jewellery worth crores of rupees. The shocking incident occurred in Haryanas Gohana township, media reported.
According to information received, the adventurous robbery was discovered on Monday morning.
Police suspect it could have taken place any time between Saturday night and early Monday.
It has been learnt that the gang dug a 125 feet long 2.5 feet wide tunnel to the strong room of the Punjab National Bank from an abandoned building across the road.
Police found two rooms in the building where the tunnel was dug from are filled with earth and windows are covered with cardboard to hide the digging activities.
Bank officials told media that the tunnel led right into the strong room secured by metal bars which was completely ransacked.
They also confirmed that the robbers managed to break open 90 of 360 lockers in the room.
Police has reportedly said that the crime was planned and executed over many days, probably stretching for more a month.
“Police is studying CCTV footage in the bank to identify suspicious persons in the past few weeks,” Gohana deputy superintendent of police Rajeev Deshwal is quoted by media as saying.
But since banks however, do not install CCTV cameras inside strong rooms, it can be difficult to track the robbers.
It may be noted here that the incident bears stark resemblance to Kerala’s Chelambra bank robbery in 2007.

In that case, robbers had drilled through the floor of the South Malabar Gramin Bank – located on the second floor of a building – to enter the strong room and loot 80 kilograms of gold and cash, which was estimated to be worth around Rs. 8 crores.
Police had, however, cracked the case within a short time and arrested four of the robbers including the kingpin.
The looted gold and cash were also recovered.
Leader had then confessed that he had been inspired by Hrithik Roshan-starred popular Hindi film ‘Dhoom’.
