Why Rakesh Maria doesn't get support as did Sushma, Vasundhara : Shiv Sena
Mumbai, June 24 (IBNS) Criticising its ally BJP the Shiv Sena has questioned why Mumbai police chief Rakesh Maria was not "justice" when senior leaders like Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje received the party's support.
"The Centre and the BJP have steadfastly backed Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje despite opposition uproar... why not the same justice for a brave officer like Rakesh Maria?" the Sena has said in an editorial in its mouthpiece Saamna.
Rakesh Maria met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis twice to defend his meeting in London last year with Lalit Modi, who is wanted in India in connection with cases of corruption, tax evasion and money-laundering during his term as chief Indian Premier League.
"What Lalit Modi has done with IPL may be an issue of contention but Rakesh Maria can't be expected to handcuff Modi and drag him back to Delhi or Mumbai. He doesn't have jurisdiction," the Sena editorial says.
"Being the king of IPL, he must have got clicked with many political leaders as well. Does this mean action will be taken against all those leaders?"
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was reportedly considering transferring Maria before he received a "satisfactory" explanation from him on Tuesday.
"Even as accusations and counter accusations fly in the political circles on the Lalit Modi saga, a condemnable attempt is being made to put the dynamic Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria in the dock," the Sena says.
"If the politicians are forgiven for every sin then for the same reason, if an official is made a scapegoat without proper inquiry, it adversely affects the state," it says.
