Thiagarajar Polytechnic College receives Education Excellence Award for the fifth time

Salem: As the boundaries between engineering disciplines disappear, young engineers must prepare to work across disciplines, experiment, prototype and solve real-world problems, Mizoram Governor General V. K. Singh (Retd.) said at the 5th IE(I) Engineering Education Excellence Summit & Awards 2026 in New Delhi on September 19.

Speaking at the summit, organised by the Institution of Engineers (India) [IE(I)], General Singh said the scale of what India had already built should give young engineers confidence, while also placing a responsibility on them for what comes next.

Engineering education, he suggested, should give greater importance to practical exposure, design thinking, prototyping and interdisciplinary projects. 

Two Sona institutions from Salem honoured for excellence in education

The summit brought national recognition to two Sona Group institutions for excellence in engineering and technical education, with Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, Salem, receiving the IE(I) Engineering Education Excellence Award for the fifth time.
 
Dr V. Karthikeyan, Director, Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, said: “Receiving the IE(I) Engineering Education Excellence Award for the fifth time reflects our continued commitment to excellence in engineering education, innovation and institutional development.” 

“The honour emphasises a responsibility to evolve with the changing needs of industry for building a Viksit Bharat,” Dr Karthikeyan added. 
 
 
The recognition comes shortly after the College recorded 100% placements for all 692 students graduating across 11 programmes at its 66th Graduation Day. 

Sona College of Technology, Salem, was also among the institutions honoured with the IE(I) Engineering Education Excellence Award at the summit, which recognised institutions across the engineering education spectrum, including universities, NITs and polytechnics. 

The recognition comes against the backdrop of Sona College of Technology’s focus on innovation, industry-linked education, research and emerging technologies, including AI-ML, semiconductors and VLSI.
