One killed during police-mob clash in West Bengal

Kolkata/South 24 Parganas, Sept 12 (IBNS): A man was killed on Sunday night when police allegedly fired bullets aiming at protesters, during a clash, at Dhola area in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, reports said.

According to reports, following the murder of a local businessman- Rauf Laskar, a large number of people had started demonstration at Dholahat Police Station since Sunday evening and they went violent suddenly later.

Besides attacking policemen, mob reportedly ransacked the police station, set several police vehicles on fire and hurled crude bombs aiming at policemen.

A large police force, along with Rapid Action Force (RAF), rushed to the scene and restored to lathicharge, lobbed tear gas shells and fired few round bullets in the air to disperse the attacking mob.

Local people claimed that police fired at least 14 gunshots aiming at the protesters during the clash and one protester- Salam Laskar- was killed after being shot.

At least 15 security personnel and several demonstrators were injured in the incident.

Police have started search operation to catch the police station attackers and till the latest update came in, at least 10 suspects have been detained for their involvement in the incident, officials said. 

"There is no confirmation so far that police fired bullets aiming at the protesters and we have started probe into the matter to know how a protester was killed," a senior official of South 24 Parganas district police told IBNS.
