Police arrests man who climbed Calgary construction crane
Calgary, Sep 20 (IBNS): A man who attempted to hijack a crane in Calgarys downtown construction site, on MOnday, has been arrested, according to media reports.
The suspicious activity of the man, who did not belong to the construction company or its affiliates, prompted the police to shut down the building site and cordon the area.
He managed to climb up to the crane's cab and was up there for close to three hours. According to Calgary police, he couldn’t operate the crane as the power was cut off.
Tenth Avenue, where the incident happened, was closed between ninth and sixth streets southwest and work was stopped at the Sixth and Tenth condo tower project for several hours for the police to investigate the incident.
According to acting Staff Sergeant Mike Saad, the Calgary Fire Department's high angle team supported the Calgary police tactical team to bring the man out of the cab and get him down to the ground.
"Police negotiators … were able to make contact with this individual," he said.
"There was no use of force on the subject at all. Negotiators were very quickly able to talk him voluntarily coming out,” added Saad.
Calgary police is still investigating the case and will speak to the man to find out why he jumped in the cab.
