Punjab unrest : Prakash Singh Badal calls emergency cabinet meeting
Chandigarh, Oct 20 (IBNS) Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has called an emergency Cabinet meeting on Tuesday as unrest continues in the state over the desecration of the holy book of Guru Granth Sahib, reports said.
On Monday, different Sikh groups barricaded highways across the state, demanding action against those responsible for desecrating the holy book and threatened to continue the blockade till October 25 for three hours every day.
Police have so far arrested three persons in connection with the desecration of the holy book.
The situation prompted Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to speak to the Chief Minister on Monday. Singh assured him "all possible help."
The Chief Minister has said that "certain forces" which want to disturb the peace in the state "are responsible for what is happening."
Alleging that the law and order situation in the state has "completely collapsed," the opposition, led by the Congress has demanded immediate imposition of President's rule in Punjab.
