Thousands of people stranded in flood-hit Kashmir, rescue on
Srinagar, Sep 10 (IBNS): Thousands of people continued to remain stranded due to flood in the regions of Srinagar and south Kashmir on Wednesday. As many as 49,000 people have been rescued from the flood-affected belts so far, reports said.
According to rough estimates, around 6 lakh people are still stranded across the flood-ravaged state. Telecommunication has been partly restored in some parts as water levels have started receding in Srinagar.
As many as 200 people have already died owing to the crisis in the state with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah dubbing the current floods as the worst in 109 years.
Sources said 61 Indian Air Force (IAF) choppers and transport aircraft had made non-stop sorties through Tuesday night to carry out the rescue operation. The Army also set up a number of medical camps at various places. They said their doctors were treating at least 200-300 people every day.
The Union Home Ministry opened a control room at Srinagar to monitor flood relief operations across the state.
