Amarnath Yatra begins; snow makes trek difficult
New Delhi , June 27 (JEN) The Amarnath Yatra began in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. This year, at least 1160 pilgrims will trek to the temple in the first batch, said reports.
According to reports, pilgrims might face difficulty in trekking due to the Himalayan snow.
On Wednesday, Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra, who is Chairman of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, visited Baltal Base Camp, Domel Access Control Gate, Holy Cave Camp, Panjtarni Camp, Sheshnag Camp and Nunwan Base Camp during a day long tour to the entire Yatra area.
He was accompanied by R.K. Gupta, Chief Executive Officer of the Shrine Board.
At all the Yatra Camps the Governor held meetings with the Camp Directors, Additional Camp Directors, officers of the Army, BSF, CRPF and representatives of all the concerned State Government Departments particularly PWD(R&B), Power, Public Health Engineering, Health, Animal Husbandry, Labour, Public Distribution, Fire Services, Sonamarg Development Authority, Pahalgam Development Authority and others to review all aspects of the various required arrangements in the entire Yatraarea.
In view of the excessively heavy snow fall in the preceding months the Governor reiterated his earlier direction to Deputy Commissioners; Security Forces, Camp Directors, and officers of all the concerned State Government departments to work most closely together to ensure the safety and security of the pilgrims and timely establishment of all required facilities.
As decided at the high level meeting chaired by the Governor, because of the track conditions and the heavy accumulation ofsnow at the site of the Sheshnag Camp, the Shri Amarnathji Yatra on June 28-30 June, 2014 would not be allowed by the Pahalgam route.
The ground position will be reviewed everyday and the Governor would take a further meeting on June 30 to decide the opening of the Pahalgam route.
