New Delhi: After two rounds of raids by the investigating agencies, the central government last night banned controversial Muslim political organisation Popular Front of India (PFI) for five years citing its terror links in a major crackdown on the "unlawful activities", media reports said.
The PFI and its affiliates have been declared an "unlawful association" under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The government has cited the PFI's links with terror groups includng Jamat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and ISIS.
"With funds and ideological support from outside, it has become a major threat to the internal security of the country," a Home Ministry order stated.
The ministry has stated the PFI has been involved in several crimes including chopping off a limb of a college professor.
A total of 247 arrests have so far been made following two-day raids, first on Sept 22 and second on Sept 27, conducted jointly by National Investigating Agency (NIA), Enforcement Directorate and state police.
